does wet macular degeneration develop slowly or quickly?
The onset of "wet" or "neovascular" macular degeneration usually is quite sudden...but can sometimes be more gradual...over days or weeks. The abnormal blood vessels which grow from beneath the retina (from the layer called the "choroid") suddenly start to leak...and blood leaks out...collecting underneath the retina. This accumulation of blood blocks the vision in the involved area...and patients will notice a dark spot or a blind spot in the area of vision corresponding to the bleeding, a loss of detailed vision (since detailed vision comes from the center of the retina) and a loss of colour vision (since colour vision also comes from the center of the retina).
