what is a macular hole and how does it develop?

A macular hole is a full-thickness hole in the center of the macula. Most commonly...they occur spontaneously...in women in their 60's and 70's. Macular holes are approximately ten times more common in women than in men...for reasons that are not known.
Patients notice a blind spot in the center of their vision...and a loss of detailed and colour vision.
Macular holes can often occur after injuries to the eye.

  1. Does the blind spot immediately vanish after
macular hole is healed , or does it take time to fade away?

  2. It takes time. The retina is really an extension of the brain. Healing takes time. The objective of macular hole surgery is to anatomically close the hole. This is what your surgeon will be looking for in the first several weeks of post-op follow up. If the macular hole is closed...then...SLOWLY...the vision will start to improve and the blind spot will vanish...typically...patients do start showing improvement within the first two months...but maximum recovery typically takes a full year.
